HN Feature Request: Option to hide repetitive AI complaints

A steady number of HN discussions seem to get sidetracked by generic complaints about AI, without adding any value. But they get upvoted.

It would be nice to have an optional setting to collapse these comments.

Going a step further, perhaps warning commenters when they post could lead to more thoughtful discussions.

On the contrary, my biggest gripe with HN are the non-generic AI complaints. If I had a dime for every HN shmuck that begged people to liken AI to Skynet, I could fund the next frontier model with my pocket change. It's anti-intellectual, unfounded and degrades the conditions where actually insightful and gratifying observations can be made. It also obviates and misdirects discussion of real-world fallible AI-assisted systems like the IDF's Lavender database by equating real-world abuses with science-fiction liabilities. Many people are using the "Terminator" narrative to paste over preexisting, real humanitarian crises that are being automated and exacerbated by AI.

My ask for HN would be to ban all corporate-sponsored fearmongering until the apocalypse is actually upon us. The current "pigs will fly" predictions have undermined the industry's credibility on AI governance and produced endless "AI 2026/2027/2028" forecasts that are embarrassingly ungrounded and of no use to real life legislators. We've entered the Infantilization Phase of tech commentary, where the constraints of reality are immaterial next to the threat of boogeymen that don't exist. If HN seeks to preserve it's reputation for grounded realpolitik, then it cannot copy the ridiculous stance that is pushed by US frontier labs and scrutinized worldwide.

Repetitive AI complaints are here to stay, and are generally more credible than the people insisting on diversionary nonsense that cannot be substantiated at all.
