MTA (think trains and buses) | Full-time | NYC | 3x/week in office

We're looking for two frontend software engineers! (Interviews are starting this week, we're very ready.)

Our team works on all the (non-ad) screens in the subway, as well as two apps (TrainTime and the MTA app) and our website. We're a team of 20, mostly engineers, a few PMs and a designer. We operate like a startup within the MTA and are responsible for all customer-facing digital endpoints.

See one of our products here: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/mta-traintime/id1104885987 as well as some new screen designs here: https://www.reddit.com/r/nycrail/comments/1h2rqr6/new_countd...

Job description and application details: https://www.mta.info/document/163661

Great job with the apps and signage. Rooting for your team!

Same!! I’m glad people are excited to make the MTA better. One of the best parts about NYC!

adityamwagh16 days ago

Traintime is an amazing app. Love it!

walrus0116 days ago

Out of completely idle curiosity, can you share what some of the LAN/WAN network connections look like for those screens? I've stared at many cables/wires and antennas that have been retrofitted into the ceilings of NYC subway stations, and sometimes it looks like multiple generations of stuff that's been added to incrementally over the past 100 years like a coral reef growing new conduit and cabling.

And then there's the cellular carrier stuff that's been put into many stations, which generally is easy to pick out because it's relatively new/clean and has distinctive antenna types.

georgemcbay15 days ago

Not the person you're replying to and I don't work for the MTA but some of the radio boxes you are seeing are likely Ultra Wideband radio beacons used for train positioning.

Similar concept to GPS but instead of satellites (which aren't so good when the trains go underground or even when they are above ground but have high building skyline obstructions) the train positions itself based on time-of-flight pings to these beacons with known locations and using multilateration to figure out where the train must be based on the distance information.

Source: Working for a company in San Diego (but travelling to NYC often) I wrote a now surely obsolete version of the positioning code (running in MISRA C on what were basically Raspberry Pi devices installed on the trains) back during the proof of concept phases of this system when it was only the 7 line 5-ish years ago back when Andy Byford was still running things.

Spent a lot of late nights on 7 line trains doing real world tests (exciting when we tested the failsafes and the train had to e-brake!) and had to get trained up to be able to walk the rail lines as we'd often be installing the track-side beacons ourselves during low traffic transit times (which is to say, usually in the middle of the night).

If you watch the video here:

https://www.railwayage.com/news/positioning-the-next-generat...

and go to 1:32 you can very briefly see another thing I wrote there, an app which would take the positioning information in real time and overlay it on to openstreetmaps data.

That app was written in Qt/C++ and wasn't even really part of the system, it was just something I wrote to make it easier to debug any problems with positioning when we could visualize them in a real world context. Generally the only time you'd have positioning errors to debug were due to some of the beacons having incorrect coordinates (I'm sure they've ironed this out a lot since the PoC). The debug app ended up being nice and flashy for the media attending the PoC demos though (more exciting to look at than some text logs) which was a nice side benefit.

mmmlinux15 days ago

This is typical of old buildings that get new technology. Almost never will the old wiring / conduit be demoed when something old gets removed. Just left in place, then who ever installs the new stuff comes along and gets to add even more conduit and wire. Even to just add stuff to an existing location, you would think oh there's already conduit from A to B no problem, Probably still going to end up with new conduit ran. This kind of stuff can be anything from abandoned old analog phone lines to CCTV to even old AC power stuff occasionally.

I have been curious if the ticketing vendors end up making it easier or harder to implement traintime (that is is their API easy to work with?)

MattPearce16 days ago

Hi Bill, I've seen your Senior SWE, Windows Desktop App position listed for quite a while, given it seems you're having a hard time filling it would you be willing to loosen the "consumer facing" part of the requirements? I'm very interested and I believe I'm an excellent fit in every other way.

I've built very sophisticated C# applications that simplify complex lighting algorithms to allow users to simply control the light timing in an automated fruit sorting machine. Unfortunately as these applications were used by business customers it seems I don't tick that "consumer facing" box despite over a decade of experience building C# UIs.

ivraatiems15 days ago

Not for nothing, but I applied a couple of years ago with similarly almost-perfect but not-customer-facing app experience, and all the other qualifications they were looking for, and was rejected with no followup, not even an initial screen.

Normally I wouldn't care, but it sticks in my memory and has soured me on applying again, because I don't know how I could get any closer to what they're asking for without literally working the job they have posted. It makes me think perhaps the posting is not accurate or complete in some way.

I was hired for a similar role with a better salary within a few months, so I don't think it was something fundamentally wrong with my application or resume. Though, granted, the market was different then. Maybe I somehow totally biffed the three or four questions they asked.

bill_duckduckgo15 days ago

I would encourage you to apply! We have a thorough review process and one of my colleagues will definitely read your application. I'll flag it with the DRI for the role and tell them to keep an eye out.

yegg15 days ago

Yes, and to the point of some of these roles being open for a long time, that's because we keep hiring more people for them over time.

leonewton25316 days ago

You seem to be over qualified if anything. Why do they need a desktop app? A webview window with a search box seems pretty simple.

gwbas1c15 days ago

I wouldn't make assumptions. When I talked with Duck Duck Go about their browser, they had a very particular idea about what it was supposed to do. Their needs are probably a bit more complicated than you're assuming.

I also wouldn't assume that anyone is overqualified. They seemed rather particular about who they wanted to hire. (Although, given the current market, a C# job opening staying open for a long time says a lot.)

SamTheDev9 days ago

Hi Bill, I applied like three weeks ago on that "Windows Desktop App" position! I haven't got any reply since. I am sure you folks get pretty decent applications but I think my profile deserves at least a reply from your side! I fit perfectly, 1O YOE, of which 5 as a SW for MSFT. An MCSD in UWP apps, 2 MSc..ect! Your talent acquisition team doesn't reply to my messages neither! I genuinely like the project and would love to work on it ft. Can I at least have a chance?

Figma | Security Engineer | Remote or Hybrid (SF, NYC, Seattle) | https://figma.com | Full-Time, $149-350k + Equity

Figma makes the tools that modern companies use to design apps. And because of that highly sensitive data, security is extremely important to get right. (If the next iPhone were designed using Figma and a breach leaked it... yeah, you get the point.)

Anyway, I am on the security team over here at Figma and reminding the excellent HN folks that we're hiring. I'm primarily working on AI and Snowflake Security currently, but I've hopped around over the past year. You likely will too!

We are a bit of a weird hybrid hiring-wise though. We need engineers with a security background than can _also_ write production-grade software.

(If you are a regular SWE then please check out Figma Careers page for a better role to apply for. There are many open roles, though keep in mind that Figma tends to only hire at the "Senior" bar and up. Not very many junior folks here.)

This is the link for my team if you're interested! Feel free to ping me at my email on my profile if you have questions. Cheers!

Not fun for an introverted developer, and not specified up front. Also if you do the paid take-home project, they mean reasonable rates for full-time, not reasonable rates for freelance.

Hightouch |Remote (North America)|Full-time | Backend, Fullstack, and Frontend Engineers

Some background on Hightouch - our mission is to help companies leverage their customer data to grow. We started with the problem of “Reverse ETL” or helping companies sync data from their data warehouse (e.g. Snowflake, Databricks, etc.) to 200+ SaaS tools (Salesforce, Marketo, Facebook Ads, etc.) without coding. n_u16 days ago

Looks like you are also hiring a distributed systems engineer https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42920292

From that listing "Sync Speed: Customers want to sync a lot of data to important destinations like Facebook and Snapchat, which requires us to analyze every part of our syncing process and find where we can optimize to sync data more quickly"

I'm curious about this. What workflow requires syncing high volumes of data from a CDW to Facebook & Snapchat at low latency? It's my understanding that businesses mostly use those platforms for advertising. I'm struggling to think of a use case where you want to adjust your advertising with low latency and lots of data? I could understand feeding lots of data from your CDW into a ML model that updates your ads through the FB Ads API but I can't see why

1. it needs to go straight from CDW to FB ?

2. it needs to be a lot of data?

3. it needs to be fast?

Perhaps there is some other use-case besides adjusting ads.

4. Also why do you use the word "syncing" rather than "send"? I tend to think of syncing involving multiple programs that can edit data (e.g. Google Docs, distributed consensus etc.). Are Facebook and Snapchat actually updating the data you send and you have to sync the other direction? Or is just one-way?

kernel_concern15 days ago

I work on the syncing team at Hightouch. These are great questions and also good feedback on how we could be clearer when describing the problems we need to solve.

1. We also support the case you describe, in which an ML model processes data and then updates properties in a destination. However, customers still get a lot of value out keeping downstream systems synced with their warehouse tables. For instance, you can define which people you want to receive different campaigns and make sure that's consistent across all your ad platforms. You can also use it for simple projects like easily keeping Airtable in sync with a Postgres database.

2. Some people have warehouse tables with many billions of rows.

3. If you have a billion rows, you need to hit a very high rows per second number in order to run a sync in a feasible amount of time. Also, we have an event collection product, which allows customers to feed events into Hightouch in realtime, and a personalization API product, which allows customers to hit an API and get a low-latency response for how a given user's experience should be personalized. Making sure that the new data flowing into the events API is processed, and data is ready in the personalization API for fast fetching, needs to be fast.

4. It's true that syncing often implies some bi-directionality. In this case we think about "syncing" the destination system state to that present in the source system. It's nice because you can use the source system as the source of truth and trust that any edits you make will be reflected elsewhere. Possibly across many destinations.

Is this helpful?

n_u15 days ago

1. > However, customers still get a lot of value out keeping downstream systems synced with their warehouse tables. For instance, you can define which people you want to receive different campaigns and make sure that's consistent across all your ad platforms.

Ah thank you that's a very helpful example for understanding your product.

2. > Some people have warehouse tables with many billions of rows.

I don't doubt customers have multi billion row tables in their CDWs but I guess I'm not seeing why you would need to send billions of rows to FB (or any other downstream system that isn't an OLAP database) rather than some much smaller payload distilled from that data via an ML model or SQL query. I admittedly have never run a FB ad campaign but Meta has 3.35 billion daily active users [1] across all of their products. If they are sending billions of rows to FB, do your customers have individualized ad campaigns for every single FB user? Perhaps I'm just not familiar enough with the state of modern digital advertising.

3. > If you have a billion rows, you need to hit a very high rows per second number in order to run a sync in a feasible amount of time.

I wonder why do you have to send billions of rows to FB every time? Surely you send it once for initial setup and then incrementally sync smaller deltas? And presumably your customer is OK with the initial setup being slower. Unless your customer is doing billions of writes to their CDW in between syncs?

Thanks for taking the time to explain!

[1] https://s21.q4cdn.com/399680738/files/doc_financials/2024/q4... page 10

kernel_concern14 days ago

You're right that typically the day to day delta we need to sync is much smaller. However, customers often want to change something for a large fraction of their dataset, requiring a large update. Also we support a our Personalization API product, for which customers do frequently want to refresh what personalizations they're showing to all of their users. For this we do need to be regularly syncing all the data.

MONUMENTAL | https://www.monumental.co/ | Amsterdam, The Netherlands | Full Time | Onsite

We’re creating robots that autonomously construct buildings. We design all of our hardware and software in-house in central Amsterdam, starting with autonomous bricklaying robots.

We have built a machine vision pipeline that can achieve sub-millimetre localisation on construction sites, and a software stack that lets us prototype on the fly. We have a pipeline full of exciting (building) projects and are making real revenue as a masonry contractor each month.

The full team is now about 45 people (and still growing fast!) There’s strong customer demand for what we’re building and we need talented people to meet it.

Our stack is mostly: Rust, TypeScript, Python, NixOS.

Other open roles:

- Software Engineer, Controls

- Software Engineer, Machine Vision

- Assembly/manufacturing technicians and robot operators

P.S. We're always on the lookout for very strong generalist engineers who can operate at any layer of the stack (firmware, networking, UI, application code - whatever's needed!)

I'm sorry to ask such a silly question, but do all of the engineering positions sponsor, or is it just the Forward Deployed Robotics Engineer position? Similarly is it primarily a dutch or English speaking office?

Only the forward engineer position mentions anything about sponsorship and language, and I'm wondering if that's because it's the only position that offers sponsorship, or if they all do

rossng12 days ago

We can sponsor visas for any engineering position.

English is the primary language at Monumental, and we have many non-Dutch speakers. However, Dutch is a _useful_ skill to have if you are frequently deployed on construction sites (and we do take that into consideration for the FDRE role).

Corgi (YC 24) | Golang/Full-Stack Engineer | In-Office | SF | Full-Time

We're building an AI-first insurance company from scratch. Not just adding AI to existing processes - we're automating the entire insurance value chain. Think of it as rebuilding the insurance stack with code instead of paperwork.

I'm part of the engineering team at Corgi. We need someone who can write solid Go code and isn't afraid to jump into React/TypeScript when needed. Our stack is cloud-native (AWS/GCP/DO), heavily containerized, and we're pushing hard on AI/ML integration.

Requirements: - 1-2 years of Go in production - Frontend experience with React/TypeScript - Cloud platform experience - Docker and database skills - Shipped real products to real users

This is an early-stage role (we're YC-backed) so you'll own features completely, from backend to frontend. We're in the office seven days a week - this isn't a role for those seeking work-life balance, but perfect if you want to build something massive from the ground up.

Note: We're looking for builders who ship. If you prefer perfect code over working products, this probably isn't the right fit.

Layer | Founding Eng | San Francisco In-Person Only | Full-Time

Layer is looking for engineers who believe in empowering American SMBs and want to be a part of high-ownership team. If you want to tackle serious technical challenges across system design, scale, and data management and you care about being on a team that has high expectations for our product and ourselves, get in touch with me at daniel [at] layerfi.com

We’re building SMB accounting software API-first so that it can be integrated directly into software platforms where business owners already work. Our customers are vertical software platforms in the vein of Toast, MindBody or Housecall Pro that help small business owners start, run and scale their business with workflows and financial products. We help them serve their customers who are stuck exporting all their data out of these systems into CSVs and importing it back into other accounting software.

Integrating with our accounting APIs gives business owners automation & accounting workflows directly within their core software while the software platforms get to solve one their customers’ biggest pain points: worrying about bookkeeping & finances.

If this sounds like you shoot me an email and tell me why this is a good fit for you - I'll respond!

Timescale

[ Global | 100% Remote | Multiple Roles: Eng, Product + more ]

Timescale is continuing to grow rapidly, and we’re hiring for many roles involving distributed systems and databases.

Timescale extends PostgreSQL to handle relational data, time-series, events, real-time analytics, and vector search in a single application database. It’s built for data-heavy, mission-critical apps while retaining the familiarity and reliability of Postgres. Ideal for IoT, crypto, finance, SaaS, and more.

Database code all available on github; we don’t have any “enterprise versions”, so all our database code is available for the community for free. Currently, see more than 3 million databases running TimescaleDB a month.

That’s because our commercial focus is on our fully-managed cloud platform, so in addition to folks implementing the core database (C, Rust), we’re also heavily hiring for folks with operational cloud & database experience at scale (Kubernetes with custom k8s operators, Golang, etc), as well as folks interested in providing highly technical support, database release engineering, and building database testing infrastructure (think performance analysis, distributed database correctness testing, etc.) And product folks to support these efforts & all our users!

Mingla | Senior Software Engineer (Elixir) | Stockholm, Sweden. REMOTE (EU) might be an option | Full Time

Mingla makes software for gamified networking at physical events. The days when social gatherings were for extroverts are over. Gamified networking elevates your experience to grasp every ounce of lost event potential and removes much of the anxiety some people feel when thrown in a room full of strangers.

We're a strong founding team with several serial entrepreneurs with multiple exits and world renowned brands created. We're looking for a senior engineer to push our Phoenix LiveView app further as we scale up this year (next up is the superbowl this weekend, a lot of interesting stuff already underway). Ideally starting in a few weeks, but it's more important that you are the right person.

We believe you're a person that loves the less structured and and changing landscape of an early company, and if you haven't used Elixir, Phoenix LiveView and Ash before you view that as something fun rather than terrifying.

If this sounds interesting, please reach out to me at chris [at] mingla.io

Seems like it's a good filter for people interested enough to create an account.

Overall, it's a buyer's market now. So they can maybe afford to miss out on someone who would've been a good mutual match, but who wasn't interested enough at first glance to create a (yet another, probably awful) job application account.

Project Healthy Minds (startupy mental health nonprofit) | Full-time | NYC | 5d/week in-office

We're looking for someone to lead our small-but-growing engineering team at our Hudson Yards office. There are about 10 full-timers in the office, but engineering and product design are all contractors / moving to full-time this year. I'm leading product and the search for this role.

This is a unique opportunity – we're building a comprehensive dataset of mental health services and outcomes while prioritizing user privacy. As a nonprofit, we have no incentive to monetize user data. Instead, we're focused on two things: 1) helping people find care across the full treatment spectrum through our screening process (as developed with our clinical advisory committee), and 2) collecting anonymized outcome data to understand what actually works in mental healthcare - something that surprisingly doesn't exist yet at scale.

Our goal is to simultaneously solve the discovery problem for people seeking care while building the dataset needed to improve mental healthcare quality and accessibility. Think of it as a privacy-first infrastructure layer for mental health services.

No previous AI experience is required, if you have the engineering skills you can learn what you need on the job.

We're looking for senior engineers to work out of our offices in SF or NYC, or remotely. Please reach out to us at [email protected] with a resume and 2-3 sentences describing your interest. Excited to hear from you!

Blueberry Pediatrics | Full-stack Senior or Staff Engineer | REMOTE (US-only)

American healthcare is seldom affordable, accessible, or high-quality. We are fixing this for pediatrics. Blueberry is the most affordable option amongst our competitors. We practice the highest quality pediatric telemedicine, as evidenced by our exclusive hiring of board-certified pediatricians and the usage of at-home medical kits. And, we’re accessible 24 hours a day.

Our success is shown in the lives we save, the costs we save our insurers, and our exploding B2B and D2C business.

As you can imagine, pulling off affordable high-quality healthcare is a challenge. It requires a lot of engineering ingenuity, a C-suite aligned with positive patient outcomes above short-term profits, and a great product team.

We use Django and Hotwire Turbo (an HTMX-like framework). Experience in these technologies helps, but what’s more important is general full-stack knowledge, curiosity, and a strong work ethic.

AngelList | Senior Software Engineers, Engineering Lead, Product Designer, Senior Data Engineer, etc | Full-time | Hybrid in San Francisco

AngelList's mission is to accelerate innovation by providing startups and investors with the tools they need to succeed. We have the world’s largest early-stage venture portfolio with $17B+ assets under management and $124B+ on our platform, delivering capital to over 12,000 startups. We work with some of the best emerging fund managers to ensure every deserving startup has access to capital.

I was hired into the role from one of these HN threads last summer. One of the things that attracted me most was the density of former founders and aspiring entrepreneurs on the team.

We're hiring full-stack engineers with experience building web applications at scale. Fintech knowledge is a plus, but not required.

I'm the hiring manager for two senior roles on our Funds Engineering team. We’re building the data layer that powers our general ledger. We work on some of the most interesting datasets out there: We model capital flows in the venture ecosystem to understand where value accrues and, ultimately, which investors and founders win or lose.

I'd be happy to talk about these roles, about any open role we have at AngelList (https://www.angellist.com/careers#open-positions), or any questions you might about working here.

Supabase.io | Customer Solution Architect / Engineer | Full-time | REMOTE (US)

I am one of the first SAs at Supabase and our role is to help onboard, optimise and advise on all parts of the Supabase platform.

No need to be a postgres expert, you will be working with customers of all sizes and using all aspects of the platform. One minute you might be onboarding an engineering team and the next you might be helping an existing customer with their scaling plans for the next 6 months or triaging a bug/feature request to ensure the Product team understands the context and priority. Technical skills are vital but "self-starter" is equally key. Being able to determine what cases need your attention compared to those that need escalating to Product or Engineering. Excellent comms skills (internal and external) certainly help, too!

I wanted to work at Supabase because of its open source nature and I want to stay here because of its fully remote, autonomous nature. Trust first in the work we do and it is easy to grab a member of the team to solve a problem async.

Astronomer | Software Engineer, Office of the CTO | NYC | astronomer.io

Astronomer is a Series C data infra startup building a data ops platform for our customers on top of Apache Airflow. Airflow is one of the largest open-source data projects, allowing users to write, run, and scale data pipelines in Python. It's downloaded over 30m times a month!

The core of this role is to experiment with new ideas and build prototypes. As a Software Engineer in the Office of the CTO, you will act as a “hacker in residence” - someone with the freedom to experiment, explore big ideas, and validate concepts. You’ll be a generalist, working with whatever technology, tools, and programming languages are required to validate an idea. For the ideas that do work out, we work hand-in-hand with the broader product and engineering teams to turn the idea into a customer-facing feature or new product.

There’s a particular focus on how Generative AI will change the lives of data professionals over the next 3-5 years. We want to lead the market with both a perspective and set of products on how AI will evolve from a human-driven copilot to a set of fully autonomous agents.

Role: https://jobs.ashbyhq.com/astronomer/77867d45-1141-4ba6-8772-...

My email is [my first name]@astronomer.io if you want to reach out directly. Please include HN in the subject line so I don't miss it!

Zest Dermatology | Remote (USA residents only) | Full-time | Systems Administrator / Software Engineer | https://zesthealth.com

Zest is a virtual dermatology clinic that delivers care for chronic eczema and psoriasis with a level of satisfaction and patient outcomes that are unheard of in conventional dermatology. What makes Zest particularly exciting is its value-based health care business model, a topic worth researching all on its own!

We are looking to add an experienced Linux and web application wizard to our small and agile core engineering team. As part of the core team you will work across and become familiar with the entire stack, and the focus will be on maintaining the AWS infrastructre (orchestrated in Terraform). If you are excited at all by the idea of using nix in a professional environment, you are very strongly encouraged to apply. (We're also not 100% married to it and will make pragmatic decisions when necessary ;).)

You'll be working with me directly, and joining at at time where your voice will be extremely infuential to the future of engineering at the business. We have an _engineering-first_ approach to IT that should be a breath of fresh air to any veteran of the IT scene!

Because of data export restrictions and access to protected health records, all applicants must reside full time in the US. Please send a resume and cover letter directly to me: hn-hiring [at] [website domain] and make sure to mention HN in the subject line.

When you say Western Europe what do you mean exactly? GMT timezoneso there’s overlap with ET? Or is it contractual, you have a business entity only in the UK?

Western Europe, as we generally operate in ET timezone and prefer a significant overlap. This is not a contractual requirement.

Alpaca.Markets | REMOTE (EU or US, EU preferred) | Software Engineer, Senior Software Engineer | varies on location

Alpaca [0] offers brokerage APIs that let you (and your customers) trade various financial instruments all around the world. I'm helping Alpaca set up a new team focused on crypto perpetual futures — they're a really elegant abstraction for trading with varying leverage, and most crypto traders prefer to trade perps rather than spot.

We're looking for candidates who like ~greenfield engineering (brand new domain within Alpaca, some integration with the legacy systems is necessary but a lot of what we're doing is new) and actually writing code. Our hiring philosophy is to bring in the right people, pay them well, and give everyone meaningful work to do.

Alpaca as a whole is about 50 engineers. We're primarily golang microservices on top of kubernetes, but we'll use whatever tools are best to get the job done and satisfy our customers. To get an idea for the kind of work we do, check out what we shipped in 2024 [1].

Auricle | Founding Biomechanical Engineer (Neurotech Medical Device) | ONSITE (Mountain View, CA) | Full-time | https://auricle.com

Auricle is developing a next-generation neurostimulation implant to restore hearing and the ability to understand speech in the millions of people who no longer benefit from acoustic amplification with hearing aids but who aren't prepared to take on the risks of a cochlear implant.

We're searching for a full-time engineer to join our founding team. Bonus points for electrical engineering experience, programming experience (Python/Matlab) and a passion for auditory science. More than anything, we're looking for someone who will be highly motivated to help bring a complex but life changing device to patients.

We're a small team formed out of Stanford and backed by YC (W21), based out of Fogarty Innovation in Mountain View. The role is primarily in-person with very occasional travel to study sites and with some flexibility for hybrid work from time to time.

Sitch App | Engineering Lead | NYC-area HYBRID (2 days/week in Brooklyn) | Full-time | Python + Django + Flutter + Rust

Sitch is a new type of concierge dating app. We're using AI + Humans to ask you questions, get to know you, then help you find love. We're a concierge matchmaker but we don't call ourselves that and we don't charge the obscene prices that matchmakers charge.

One of our metrics is how little time you spend in the app. We're explicitly opposed to the dopamine-fueled mini-game doomswiping of 'traditional' dating apps which cynically monetizes desperation.

* We're top-tier VC funded, small team of 2 cofounders (Snapchat, Bumble) and 3 engineers, based in NYC.

* Stack is Django, OpenAI, Flutter, Rust for Chat infrastructure.

* Looking for a Sr. Eng who is an all-arounder and wants to eventually manage. Backend more important than front-end code, but if can also work on client code (or want to learn) that would be ideal.

* 2 days/week in person, in Brooklyn, and the rest remote. We strongly prefer NYC area candidates.

See our "corporate" (hah!) site at https://unusual.inc, and our app site at https://joinsitch.com, and feel free to send me a note at [email protected]

We value collaboration: pair programming, discussing, teaching and learning from others. We're looking for mission-driven engineers. People who see problems in the world and want to help solve them.

You'd be working with me to build the most intuitive, performant, and modern mission planning and flight monitoring software for drones, and related applications (tools for drone design and manufacturing). For my project, we use React, Tailwind, Node, drizzle-orm, Postgres, SQLite, deck.gl, Python, FastAPI, asyncio, and more. You're allowed (and compensated) to use AI services.

If interested, email my temporary email: [email protected]. Temporary only because of spam emails (not related to hiring).

Freed | Software Engineers (Fullstack / AI / SRE), Tech Lead Manager | REMOTE (US, Canada) | https://getfreed.ai | Full-time

Doctors are overworked, burnt out, and are quitting in masses.

I'm head of engineering at Freed, where we combine clinician love with the latest AI tech and intense execution to create products that make clinicians happier.

Sourcegraph | San Francisco | Full-Time | SWE, Database Platform Eng, Forward Deployed Eng, Designer, Customer Eng, Technical Advisor (all roles write code) | https://sourcegraph.com

Sourcegraph is how enterprises industrialize software development with AI. We accelerate and automate how software is built in the world's most important companies, including 7/10 top software companies by market cap and 4/6 top US banks.

Every successful codebase becomes large and complex. Instead of improving the product, devs spend more of their time just understanding the code and doing low-level tasks. The solution is to accelerate humans doing what they're best at--and to automate the rest with AI agents, meaning more creativity and less toil for devs.

Sourcegraph is the industrial software development platform, accelerating human devs with contextual AI and automating toil away with AI agents, and it's proven today in the world's most important companies. Our tech stack combines frontier technologies in code search, static analysis, and LLM training and evaluation. Our founders code!

Purplefish | https://purplefish.com/careers | Member of Technical Staff | Full-Time | ONSITE | New York, NY, USA | NextJS, Typescript, Python | $150k-$225k + 0.5%-1%+

Purplefish is transforming the trillion-dollar talent industry with powerful AI agents that will fully automate most hiring processes end-to-end.

We are funded by 8VC, and Adam and I previously worked closely together to launch 145 companies at the venture studio Fractal Software out of a $650 million fund. Before that I was a staff software engineer at Lyft, and Adam was CRO at Wunderkind ($100m+ ARR). We've built a powerful voice agent, and are expanding into other parts of the sourcing-to-onboarding flow.

We're currently a team of 3 engineers in NYC (9 people total). We're working on really cool problems with multimodal AI agents (and some really not cool problems like ATS and HRIS integrations). I'm trying to build the engineering team that I would want to join, which to me means a high emphasis on agency, purpose, technical excellence, collaboration, learning and velocity. Recently A16Z mentioned us in the state of voice AI report: https://a16z.com/ai-voice-agents-2025-update/

We're building on LiveKit's agents framework and a host of other systems. We're looking for builders - people who are willing to learn and experiment and build fast.

If that's interesting, let's talk.

Juniper (YC W21) | Senior Software Engineer | Full-time | HYBRID NYC | juniperplatform.com

Juniper is working to improve the messy financial infrastructure for US Healthcare. We've built an automated end-to-end insurance billing system for recurring care, starting with Autism clinics. It’s a product that clinicians need and love.

We automate and abstract the tedious, manual, repetitive work that goes into the administrative duties of running a clinic, so that clinicians can do what they do best — providing care.

It starts with ingesting clinic data, and then create, validates, and submits claims to insurance providers across the country. If claims need corrections or appeals, most of the time we can handle those automatically or our CX and Operations team use our in-house internal tools. We also handle patient invoicing for co-pays, co-insurance, and deductibles (we never send anything to collections). We track money movement on a unified ledger and reconcile transactions with clinics' bank accounts.

There is so much more to build. If you're interested in scaling data pipelines, programmable rules engines, AI, data science, delightful products for small clinics, processing billions of dollars in money movementm or solving the unsexy problems that make this country's healthcare broken, come join us!

We are a team of ~40 with strong product market fit. You’ll be working with an engineering leadership team from AWS and Stripe to get clinicians back to work delivering care for kids.

AuthZed (W21) | Multiple Roles | Remote | Full-time | $150-270k

AuthZed Cloud is fully-managed, database-as-a-service platform built to be the foundation for authorization across product suites and oceans. At the core of AuthZed Cloud is SpiceDB, the premier open source database designed specifically to store and query access control data.

For years, there have been libraries to help developers build authorization systems, but that hasn't stopped broken access control from becoming a substantial threat to the internet. The core hypothesis behind SpiceDB is that the best foundation for authorization systems is one that is centralized rather implemented ad-hoc in each application. By providing a system that is designed to be ran by a platform team centrally for an entire organization, developers can standardize workflows, testing flows, and how to interoperate between their applications.

You can find all of our open roles at the bottom of this page: https://www.workatastartup.com/companies/authzed

I am confused. Roles say ' fully remote role open to people living in either Denver, CO or Boulder, CO'. In what sense is this 'fully remote'?

nedwin15 days ago

We're 100% remote in that we don't have offices anywhere in the world, you can work from home etc.

However we're focusing our hiring on specific hubs including Colorado (we actually don't mind which city / town you live in within Colorado), and Brazil (with some emphasis on Florianopolis.

We have team mates all over the world, so we're not totally opposed to folks coming from wherever but it's not without its overhead: regulatory burden in needing to register and pay taxes in all of these jurisdictions, impacts on ability to get together for offsites in central locations etc.

So yes, we're fully remote but for these roles we have a strong bias for people in Colorado or Brazil.

Sequin | Platform Engineer | San Francisco | ONSITE We're building the world's fastest change data capture (CDC) platform for Postgres. CDC is a proven pattern that enables real-time use cases like triggering side effects, fanning out events, caching at the edge, and audit logging - but existing solutions are notoriously difficult to set up and maintain.

We're making CDC easy enough for weekend projects yet robust enough for Fortune 500 companies.

Sequin is open source/MIT (https://github.com/sequinstream/sequin). We're backed by Kleiner Perkins and Craft Ventures.

Tech Stack: Elixir/Phoenix, LiveView + Svelte, Postgres

What makes this role exciting:

- Join an early-stage open source project with significant technical influence

- Build a tool you would use for a user you understand

- Work deeply with Postgres

- Solve novel distributed systems challenges (not building CRUD apps)

- Work with Elixir/Phoenix and OTP primitives in production

- High-energy environment focused on rapid iteration and customer impact–we ship a lot, and fast!

We're based in San Francisco, where we have an office. Learn more: https://sequin.notion.site/

Konvu | https://konvu.com/ | Software Engineer | FULLTIME | ONSITE | Paris, France

At Konvu, we're on a mission to make security invisible. As we move towards a future dominated by code automatically generated, tested, and deployed by AIs, we need a new paradigm for application security. We need vulnerabilities to be automatically detected, prioritized and remediated.

Behind Konvu are founders with deep roots in the security industry. As part of the founding team at Sqreen (YC W18), a notable security startup acquired by Datadog, we have firsthand experience in driving security solutions from concept to global impact.

We're looking for:

Stealth | San Francisco, CA (hybrid: M-W-F ONSITE) | Full-time | Fullstack Engineer

We're looking for a backend-leaning fullstack dev. Highlights:

- We're a 5-person startup in San Francisco (hybrid: 3 days/week in office)

- We're working on a b2b SaaS for managing/analyzing cloud costs for really large companies.

- The domain isn't cool, but the complexity is fractal and the need is huge.

- Typescript/Python/Clickhouse currently

- Our founders are also the founders of the Duckbill Group, an AWS cost consultancy. As a result, we've got a great, built-in sales pipeline.

- As a result of that, we're bottlenecked on our ability to just build the features our users clearly want.

- So we're hiring a 4th engineer: a backend-leaning full stack dev to build and own large swaths of this thing we're creating!

- We're looking for someone with 5+ years of experience, though probably closer to 8-10, depending on the person and the experience.

- Comp is 175k-200k base, 0.5-0.75% equity.

If you're interested, apply here: https://careers.duckbillgroup.com/apply/CBxnybZYqm/Full-Stac...

I promise I'm personally reading everything that comes in through that link.

Does fractal here imply complex or simple? (they're visually complex but mathematically simple)

GeneralMayhem15 days ago

Not the person you're replying to, but I often use "fractal complexity" to describe problems with a certain character, and I (and I assume this poster as well) mean it in the more precise sense: as Wikipedia puts it, fractals have "detailed structure at arbitrarily small scales". Fractal problems have complexity at every level of resolution; they're tricky in broad strokes, and if you zoom into one area it's internally complex, and if you zoom into any sub-area it's internally complex, and so on, forever.

Most of computing is this way if we're honest about it; the space of possible sub-disciplines of software engineering is nearly infinite, as is every possible subfield thereof, or sub-sub-field, or...

fishtoaster15 days ago

GeneralMayhem captured it pretty well, but yeah: it's complex at every scale. You see some complexity, you zoom in, and you find that the bit you zoomed in on is just as complex!

Our founders are pretty deep domain experts on aws cost management. At this point one of them has pretty much a catch phrase: whenever I say how I think some little aspect of aws billing works, he'll reply with "Let me complicate that for you" and describe 2-3 edge cases where what I thought I knew doesn't quite apply. :)
